Mulberry Leaf Softened a Post-Meal Sugar Spike

Mulberry · หม่อน · Morus alba

Mulberry — หม่อน (mon) — Morus alba.

Mulberry — mon. Its blood-sugar effect comes from the leaf. In one controlled trial, a concentrated mulberry-leaf extract softened the after-meal glucose rise in adults with impaired blood sugar. The edible part is the berry, and it carries vitamin C, iron, and vitamin K. The vitamin C in mulberries helps your body build collagen and acts as an antioxidant that protects your cells. Their iron sits at the center of hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen through your blood. Their vitamin K helps your blood clot normally and works with calcium to keep bones strong. Tom Gai Baan Bai Mon is a chicken soup finished with fresh mulberry leaves and herbs like lemongrass, served with jasmine rice. Cha Bai Mon is tea made from young mulberry leaves, blanched, then roasted dry before steeping, and served warm with Thai sweets. The young leaves are edible too, usually cooked as a green, and the berries' vitamin C helps your body absorb plant-based iron. Because concentrated mulberry-leaf products can affect blood sugar, ask your doctor before combining them with glucose-lowering medication. Prune hard to a low framework each winter for a bigger crop within reach.

Research context

Mulberry-leaf extract blunted post-meal blood-sugar spikes in a controlled trial — J Diabetes Investig, 2011

Safety note. On diabetes drugs (insulin/sulfonylureas), mulberry-leaf tea/supplements can lower blood sugar too far — monitor.

Narration transcript

Opening

Mulberry — หม่อน, mon. The berries ripen red to near-black and stain your fingers purple the moment you pick them — but it's the leaf that built empires, the one food a silkworm will eat. You eat the sweet-tart berries fresh; the young leaves get cooked as a green or brewed as tea. Pick them dead ripe, when they drop at a touch.

ต้มไก่บ้านใบหม่อน

Tom gai baan bai mon is a country-style chicken soup finished with fresh mulberry leaves and herbs like lemongrass, served with jasmine rice.

ชาใบหม่อน

Cha bai mon is a tea made from young mulberry leaves, blanched, then roasted dry before steeping, and served warm with Thai sweets.

Nutrition summary

Those stain-your-fingers berries lead with vitamin C, back it with real iron, and add a little riboflavin.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is used to build collagen and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

Iron

Iron is part of hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen in your blood, and it supports normal energy metabolism.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K contributes to normal blood clotting and helps maintain healthy bones, working alongside calcium in your body.

Closing

If you take diabetes medication, check with your doctor before making concentrated mulberry-leaf tea or supplements a habit, since the leaf can push blood sugar lower. Prune the tree hard to a low framework each winter and next year's berries come within easy reach. Follow Longevity Biome, and LIKE this video for regular updates.
